FAQ - Baby Swimming

1.Will the float be stuck at the baby’s neck or will the baby sink while using the float during swimming?

The buoyancy will cause human to lose 90% of his/her weight in water. For example a 60kg man weighs only 6kg in water. Therefore the float will be able to take the weight of a baby. The float is ergonomically designed for babies to place their chin at the front of the float, allowing the weight of the chin to be comfortably rested on the float. Babies do not need to lift up their heads and the will not slip out of the float.

2.Why does my newborn baby flushed when he starts to swim?

The appropriate temperature of the water for new born babies to swim is 38℃—40℃, which is considered warm. Warm water causes the arteries and the pores to expand, thus blood will flow faster to the surface of the skin. This is a normal reaction when coming into contact with warm water.

3.Why encourage newborn to swim?

Swimming enables newborn to grow physically and mentally.

a) To a newborn, it is very important for them to eliminate the fear of a new environment. When a newborn starts to swim, it is as though they are back to the mother’s womb, allowing them to move freely, helping them to adapt to the “outer world” via the “inner world” environment.

b) Swimming helps to develop newborn’s brain development.

A newborn's brain is very fragile, however it grows very fast. Due to the rapid development of the brain, the stimulation of the brain during the first 2 years of a newborn is extremely important.

The stimulation of the brain works best of newborn 0-6 months. The skin is extremely sensitive to touch and stimulation via swimming. Swimming helps the newborn to be aware of his/her surroundings, which inertly develops his/her sight, hearing, and balance.

c) Swimming helps newborn/baby to grow better.

Other than a healthy diet, exercise is also a key factor for newborn/babies growth. For newborn/baby, swimming is the most natural and effective form of exercise. During swimming, newborn/baby learns to use his/her arms to paddle. The ripple on the newborn/baby’s skin and the water pressure develops the chest muscles. Swimming develops newborn/baby’s motor skills and flexibility.

4.What are the benefits of swimming?

a)Swimming helps to develop the heart and lungs of the baby.

b)Increase food digestion and absorption, increasing the immunity of the baby.

c)Develops the neurotics and intellectuals

d)Helps newborn/baby to develop regular sleep

e)Reduce newborn/baby crying and improve relationship between parents and the baby.

f)Develops newborn/baby’s motor skills and flexibility

g)Swimming is not just about coming into contact with water, but it trains the sight, hearing, touch and balance of the baby.

5.How old can a baby start to swim?

The babies in US and Europe starts to swim from 4-6 weeks. We recommend babies to start swimming after the umbilical cord drops off (after 4th week)

6.What is the best position a baby should swim in?

A newborn less than 2 month loves to swim backstroke, they do not cry and feel very comfortable. If you take them out of the water they may even complain! Another position baby loves will be kicking of the water. Their legs will start kicking, their fist will be clenched and their arms will be rowing inwards. The movement of the legs is much higher than that of the arms.

After 2 – 3 months, babies prefer to swimming chest down.

Swimming will train the baby not to be afraid of water, and as long as they can play and stretch leisurely in water, any position counts as long as it is safe.

7.Why does my baby cry the moment the float is worn around his/her neck?

Some babies are not so receptive and they do not want to try it. Parents have to be patient and let him/her to adapt in water for a few times. After 2-3 tries, they will love it.

8.Why is it important to give babies glucose after swimming?

The warm water will increase the secreting of sweat. Glucose is needed to replace the loss of water.
